The Xi’an City Wall “One Belt One Road” International Marathon

A group of us international students and teachers joined the 2019 City Wall International Marathon in Xi’an. Most of us ran the 5k, Joseph ran the 13k, and one of the teachers ran the half marathon. Visually, the event was stunning—it was a perfect rainy day, giving the wall a solemn presence that stood in stark contrast to the cheery, almost festival-like appearance of the runner’s colors. We were soaked by the time we began the race, but thankful for the clean air that came with it. Running on the historical wall will be one of my favorite memories from China—watching the buildings, dancers, and onlookers pass (slowly) by, every in of it drenched in rain—was well worth an early morning. The choruses of “jia you” cheered us on for the duration of the race. At the finish line, we were met with cold water and medals. Mine is by far my favorite participation trophy I’ve ever received! Warmed almond milk, jerky samples, and group photos highlighted the rest of our time at the wall. While none of us placed in the 5k or half-marathon, we had a fantastic time, soaked clothes and all. Joseph placed 7th in the 13k and beat his previous record—so we celebrated with a lunch at Subway!
